What is ultra-fast broadband?
Your home broadband connection will be one of three types
- ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) – an older, traditional type of broadband that works through the copper wires of existing telephone lines.
- Fibre technology, which uses a network of fibre-optic cables to deliver data over longer distances and at greater speed than ADSL. The two main types are known as FTTP, which gives a dedicated connection running from the exchange to your property; and FTTC which uses fibre-optic cables to the main exchange, then connects with properties via traditional copper wires.
- Cable technology which delivers superfast broadband to your home over cable TV networks.
Superfast and ultra-fast broadband – what’s the difference? Cables and speed…. Both will use fibre optic cables. Superfast uses cables to your junction box, then more traditional wires into your home. Ultra-fast uses cables are laid straight into your home. But unless you are buying a new home with the service already installed, this can be expensive. Fibre technology can offer speeds of up to 300Mbits, speeding up downloads and limiting buffering on tv and music streaming services, enabling high-quality video calls and facilitating several people using the connection simultaneously. You can even use your internet outside in your garden as FTTP should keep you in range.
Can I get ultra-fast broadband?
Yes - all Redrow homes come with FTTP (fibre to the premises) as standard. A good broadband connection has never been more important, so it’s no surprise a reliable and quick internet is at the top of the list for many home movers. And, while FTTP broadband speeds can vary based on location and service provider, Redrow will make sure they choose the quickest broadband available in the area.
And you can check your internet speed with Ofcom.
Where to find the best ultra-fast broadband deals and ultra-fast broadband packages
When looking for the best deal it’s important to remember that ‘one size doesn’t fit all’. Everyone’s needs are different. If you’re a professional, who relies on the internet for work, an avid gamer or a serial Netflix binger, a reliable connection with the fastest speeds are probably the main considerations. Alternatively, if you only use the internet to visit social media sites or apps, or the occasional email, then you may place a greater importance on price. Remember that your choices might be limited by where you live, and what infrastructure is in place locally. So, when doing your research, make use of comparison sites like USwitch, as these allow you to enter your postcode and check what’s on offer in your location.
In addition to availability, USwitch, other comparison sites, like MoneySuperMarket and Which.co.uk will show average speed, set up costs; hardware and installation, the price per month and contract duration.
Don’t forget to do your research and see how other users rate their customer service.
