Ep 16 How We Build Your Home

4th February 2022

Join us for our latest episode of The New Homes Podcast, where we provide an insight into how your home is built with our group construction manager Zara Barrow and site manager Peter Scheu.

From the different stages of building your home, our sustainability commitments, and our rigorous quality inspections, to what to expect on your hard hat tour and after you move in, we delve beyond the bricks and mortar to discover what sets us apart from other home builders.

How your home is built

We’re well known for the characterful features of our Heritage Collection, but all beautiful homes begin their lives with the less glamorous basics of foundations followed by substructure and drainage, which includes block work up to your damp proof course. Things quickly take an exciting turn during the superstructure phase when your brick and block work is completed, including Arts and Crafts inspired Heritage features like brick detailing and plinths, together with flooring and roof joists before your home is eventually made watertight. You can read more about the stages of building your home.

Zara said: “We’re constantly checking and inspecting at every stage. We have our own internal inspection process using our site management inspection app (RED Smi) and external checks are undertaken with the NHBC.”

By the time the first fix is complete, your home will include the internal stud wall framework, electric cables & back boxes, and pipework for all your plumbing.

Your first glimpse inside

Once the first fix is complete, it’s time for your hard hat tour. This is your first chance to see inside and a thrilling part of the experience of buying a new Redrow home. Read more about what you can expect on your hard hat tour here or watch our hard hat tour film. Explaining what to look forward  on your visit, Zara said: “They can see it all in real life as it’s being built. It is a really exciting time for the customers.”

Peter adds: “We’re also building that relationship with our customers from day one, so when they move in, that relationship is already there.”

Finishing touches

Our mark of quality is clear to see when you step foot in any show home or Redrow property. It’s the result of our exacting standards and attention to detail at every stage of construction, including when we apply the finishing touches inside your new home. Zara explains: “We undertake a pre-paint inspection, which is something we’ve decided to do as an extra, to ensure when the painter comes in it’s clean, prepped and they have the best canvas to work on so the finish can be really sharp and clean.”

Once all of your choices and extras have been chosen via My Redrow and have been installed, it’s time for your home demo, which takes place before you move in and is when, Peter said, “excitement levels go through the roof” for customers.

Peace of mind

The team also discuss the benefits of your new home’s warranty, meaning it is covered for 10 years in the rare event that any structural issues arise.

Zara explains: “Ultimately, it’s peace of mind for the home buyer. We provide a two-year warranty to all of our customers. That then extends another eight years with the NHBC warranty, providing that added comfort. They have that support for the first 10 years in their home.”

Completion day and beyond

On completion day you finally get your keys, and it’s a moment to savour for you and our team, whose efforts are rewarded by your smiling faces. It’s also a very busy time for you and one Peter is keen not to disrupt, saying: “If I’ve done everything right, we’ve gone through everything with a fine-tooth comb, you’re not going to hear from me on completion day. I’m not going to knock on your door because it’s a very busy day. I’ll usually come and see you the following day when you’ve had chance to settle down.”

Due to the complex nature of building a home you may, from time to time, need assistance to address questions or issues that arise. Zara explains the ‘drying out’ process and how it can be helped along, and the group talk about our digital Homeowner Support platform, where you can find handy ‘how to’ guides and videos or log any issues that require our attention once you’ve moved in.

So whatever stage of the buying process you’re at, we hope you’ll agree that watching your home take shape is pretty exciting - and moving in is even better. My Redrow, the members’ area of redrow.co.uk is there to guide you, from finding your perfect home, to supporting you once you’ve moved in, and at every stage in between.
